안녕~ 저는 그룹 강의보다는 일대일 한국어 과외를 주로 하는데요, 보통 개인 공부할 시간이 거의 없는 바쁜 분들이 많아요.
Hi~ I mainly teach Korean through one-on-one lessons rather than group classes, and many of my students are super busy and barely have time to study on their own.

다들 아시겠지만, 외국어에 유창해지는 길이 그렇게 쉬운 길이 아니잖아요.
As you probably know, becoming fluent in a foreign languages isn't exactly an easy journey.

하나를 가르쳐 드리면 다음 수업 때 완전히 처음 배우는 것처럼 모르시고, 또 가르쳐 드려도 복습할 시간이 없으니까 또 까먹고...
I teach something one, but by the next lesson, it feels like completely new to them again. Even if I teach it again, they often don't have time to review, so they keep forgetting...

제 생각에 한국어의 가장 큰 특징이자 매력은 한국어가 상황 중심적이면서 동사 중심적인 언어라는 점입니다. 이러한 한국어의 특징은 일상 생활에서 가장 빈번하게 사용되는 인사말에서 가장 극명하게 드러납니다. 가령, 상황이 허락만 한다면 한국어의 인사는 동사의 의미와 가장 직접적으로 관련이 있는 부사를 제외한 나머지는 모두 제외합니다.

In my view, the most distinctive and appealing aspect of Korean lanauge is its situational and verb-oriented nature. This characteristic of Korean is most strikingly evident in everyday greetings, which are frequently used. For instance, if the situation allows, Korean greetings streamline to focus primarily on the verb and its most directly related adverbs, omitting all else.

한국어에서는 동사가 정말 중요합니다. 대화에 참여하는 모든 사람들의 상황 정보가 동사에 담기기 때문이죠. 예를 들면 듣는 사람을 존중함을 표시하기 위해서 동사의 마지막에는 말하는 사람과 듣는 사람의 사회적 관계나 친밀감의 정도에 따라 각기 다른 '어미(ending)'를 붙여 직접적으로 말하지 않고도 상대방에 대한 존중을 표현합니다. 이 언어를 사용하는 사람들끼리 일종의 암호를 주고 받는 것이죠.

Verbs are incredibly important in Korean because they carry situational information about everyone involved in the conversation. For example, to show respect for the listener, the speaker conjugates the verb ending to reflect their social relationship or degree of intimacy with the listener, indirectly expressing respect. It's like a code shared among speakers of the language.

한국어가 상황 중심적이면서 동사 중심적인 언어라는 특징은 한국어의 다양한 문장에서도 발견됩니다. 그 대표적인 예 중 하나로, 대명사(pronoun)의 사용을 들 수 있습니다. 한국어로 이루어지는 일상생활에서는 대명사가 있음에도 불구하고 거의 사용하지 않습니다. 말하는 대상이 상황에 있고, 상대방에게 눈을 마주치면서 말하는 등의 여러 가지 상황적인 조응 요소가 있기 때문에 듣는 사람 알 것이라고 믿는 것이죠. 그래서 한국어에서는 거의 대부분의 경우에 대명사를 말하지 않습니다. 확실하지 않다면 다시 물어 보면 되니까요.

The characteristic of Korean being both context-oriented and verb-oriented is evident in various sentences. A prime example is the usage of pronouns. In everyday Korean, despite the existence of pronounce, they are rarely used. This is because the listener is presumed to understand based on contextual cues, such as being present in the situation and making eye contact. Therefore, in most cases, pronouns are omitted in Korean. If there is any uncertainty, one can simply ask again.

A: [no pronoun] 이름이 뭐예요? - What is the name?
B: 누구요? 저요? - Who? Mine?
A: 네, 이름이 뭐예요? - Yeah, what is your name?
B: (제 이름은) 조이예요. - My name is Joy.
A: [no pronoun] 어느 나라 분이세요? - Where are you from?
B: 저는 영국에서 왔어요. - I'm from UK.

특히나 한국어에는 상대방의 이름을 모를 경우 영어의 'you'와 같은 대명사를 직접적으로 사용하지 않습니다. 즉 한국어에서 인칭대명사는 문법적 의무가 없다고 보는 것이 맞겠습니다. 대신 한국어의 인칭 대명사는 문법적 의무는 없지만 대화에서 특정한 기능을 합니다.

Koreans don't use personal pronouns equivalent to 'you' in English when they don't know the name. Personal pronouns in Korean are not grammatically obligatory. Korean pronouns, unlike their English counterparts, do not function grammatically in the same way, but they serve pragmatic purpose.

물론 위의 인칭대명사는 항상 각각에 맞는 어미(ending) 쌍을 가지기 때문에 말할 때 필요에 따라 자유롭게 생략되어도 전혀 문제가 없습니다. 다만, 상대방이 말하지 않아도 알 것이라고 지나치게 넘겨 짚으면 커다란 문제가 될 수 있으니 주의하셔야겠습니다. 실제로 최근 대한민국 대통령이 한국어로 한 발언에서 정치적으로 문제가 되는 내용이 있었는데요, 주어를 말하지 않았으니 대통령 님의 의도가 어땠는지 알 수는 없지만 오해의 소지가 많아서 아직도 논란이 뜨겁습니다.

Of course, the personal pronouns mentioned above each come with their corresponding verb endings, so they can be freely omitted as needed without any issue. However, it's important to be cautious, as assuming too much that the other people will understand without exlicit mention can lead to significant misunderstandings. In fact, there was a recent case where a statement made by the President of South Korea in Korean became politically problematic. The subject was not specified, so while the President's intentions remian unclear, the ambiquity has led to ongoing controversy.

이제는 시제와 관련된 이야기를 하겠습니다. 영어에서 시제는 문법적으로 반드시 지켜져야 하는 원칙 중의 하나입니다. 반면에 한국에서는 과거에 일어난 것인지 현재에 일어난 일인지를 구별할 수만 있다면 의미 전달에 전혀 문제가 없기 때문에 모든 동사에 시제를 표시하지 않습니다. 대신 시간의 순서대로 말한 다음에 마지막 동사에만 시제를 표시하면 의미 전달이 가능했기에 거의 대부분의 한국어의 이어진 문장들이 모두 시간의 순서대로 나열되는 경향이 강합니다.

Now let's talk about tense. In English, maintainning tense is a grammatical principle that must be strictly followed. In contrast, in Korean, as long as it is clear whether something happended in the past of is happening in the present, there is no problems in conveying meaning, so not every verb needs to be marked for tense. Instead, by stating events in chronological order and marking only the last verb for tense, meaning can be conveyed effectively. This is why most connected sentences in Korean tend to be arranged in chronological order.

A: 아침에 일어나서 뭐 했냐? - What did you do when you woke up in the morning?
B: 밥 먹고 씻고 공부했지. 왜 그런 걸 물어 봐? - I ate, washed, and studied. Why do you ask?

흥미롭게도 제가 만난 수많은 영어권 한국어 학습자들이 한국어의 시제를 정확하게 표현하고 싶은 갈망이 있었습니다. 그래서 과거, 현재, 미래는 물론 진행형 시제를 우선적으로 배우려고 하는데, 한국어의 일상 대화를 잘 들어 보시면 특별한 의미를 전달하고 싶지 않는 이상 진행 시제와 미래 시제는 부사로 표현되는 경우가 상당합니다. 그래서 저는 한국어를 학습하실 때 한국어의 시간 부사를 최대한 많이 공부하시라고 권장합니다.

Interestingly, many English-speaking learners of Korean I have met have expressed a strong desire to accurately convey tense in Korean. Therefore, they prioritize learning past, present, and future tenses, as well as the progressive form. However, if you listen carefully to everyday Korean conversations, you'll notice that unless there is a specific meaning to convey, the progressive and future tenses are often expresses using adverbs. That's why I recommand that when studying Korean, learners should focus extensively on understanding and using Korean time adverbs.

저는 벌써 집에 왔어요. - I have already come home.
저는 지금 공항에 도착해서 자리에 앉았어요. - I've arrived at the airport and am now sitting down.

심지어 한국어에는 시제가 없는 문장도 있습니다. 영어에서는 동사의 기본형이 현재 시제를 나타내지만 한국어에서는 동사의 기본형을 일상 언어에서 사용하는 일이 거의 드뭅니다. 시제가 없는 말은 말하거나 쓰는 사람의 주관성을 배제하고 객관성을 더욱 부각하고자 하는데, 이런 것은 어떤 것의 제목, 표제어, 구호, 신문기사 제목에서 자주 등장합니다.

Interestingly, there are sentences in Korean that do not have tense. While the base form of a verb in English indicates the present tense, using the base form of a verb in everyday Korean is quite rare. Tenseless expressions are used to eliminate the subjective of the speaker or writer and to emphasize objectivity, commonly appearing in titles, headlines, slogans, and newspapre article titles.

너무 오랜만에 하는 포스팅이죠..? ㅎㅎ
